This plant has taken over where I just demolished a compost pile. There are about 15-20 plants with heart shaped leaves. Under the first set of leaves it looks like it will fruit because of a small yellow flower. Having been in the compost area I think it could be a number of fruits or veggies I have disposed of......

green leaf like fingers

by Bobbi Meredith
(Marietta, GA 30068)

Quarter resting on leaf.

Quarter resting on leaf.

Very large green leaves which are similar to a hand with 9 fingers. I have placed a quarter on the leaf so you can see how large (some highter leaves are even larger) and the 'baby leaves' shoot out along with a white flower that turned to a cluster of dark berrys or seeds (could not get a good picture of the berrys). This plant stays green year around and the one in front of my door is more bushy as I keep removing the leaves when they start to yellow. The one which is not cared for has fewer leaves which fall off on their own.

This plant is out doors, gets partial sun and only gets water when it rains. It is at least 15 feet tall. It does not have a scent that is easily noticed. It is located Marietta GA,

I would like to learn more about the care and reproduction of the plant. Once I have had it identified, this should be easy.

Grew from a tiny plant to a 7 foot mystery plant this summer in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It is located in a flower garden that receives sun all day long. green leaves, bulb that never blooms

by Amy
(Alexandria, Virginia)

Mystery bulb

Mystery bulb

I found a giantic bulb (the size of a good onion) while digging in my garden about seven years ago. I moved it, and it has since multiplied into about 30 more bulbs, which I spread around the gardens hoping to find the right spot for it, but it never has bloomed anywhere.

I am in Alexandria Virginia (zone 7) and the foliage appears every year in mid-April, comes to full height (16"-18") in about three weeks, and then turns yellow and dies off in about a month (early June) as the weather gets to the high 80's-90's. The picture was taken on May 3. It is probably full-size now.

The bulb is white, sometimes with a papery crust (reddish-brown) with pure white roots, and stays close to the surface (4"-6" deep). My soil is very acidic, loamy and rich.

I have a habit of taking potted flowering plants I get as seasonal gifts, and tossing them in the ground. I suspect this may have been some summer-blooming bulb that has never gotten a chance to rest?

Thank you in advance for any insights you all have.

Amy

green leaves and green flowers

by Norm
(Alberta)

The plant is growing in NW Alberta, Canada, about 4.5' tall, the photos are of one branch, about 3' in length. It is growing in a lady's garden, she thought it was an escaped flower and so kept it alive, and is now concerned that it is a weed. Leaves are alternate, petioled, broadly lanceolate to ovate with smooth to softly wavy margins, glaborous. The stem is solid bumpy/striped light green but reddish tinged on the bottom. Infloresence you can see in the photos better than I can describe it.

green leaf red stem perennial

by CindyPDX
(Portland, Oregon, Multnomah County)

I found this plant along a bike path near the MAX transit system in SE Portland, Oregon. Seems the city landscaper just mows over these plants even though it seems to be planted every 50 feet along the bike path. I picked up some of the cuttings as well as pulled up a small bit of the plant and put it in water and both the cut stem and uprooted piece are growing roots. The leaves & parts of the stem are soft and furry, and some stems from this plant are red. I'm positive this is not a weed and it seems to take a licking and survive.

It grew where there was once an azalea at the base of a large Centenial Pine tree. In the three years it has not produced flowers or fruit of any kind. closeup of plant small and larger plant

I moved into a house that the perennial garden was partially established but overrun with weeds and grass. However in my weeding and cleaning I noticed this plant that comes back every year (3 years) but does not look like a weed to me. It is growing in partial shade (tree nearby) on the west side of my house. It grows in small clusters sporadically - however there is a larger cluster of them that are centralized to one area of the garden. The more mature plants are not any larger than about 13-16". Most of the clusters are smaller (about 4-6"). I think it is a great accent for my perennial garden but would like to identify the growing habits and water usage prior to planting other things around it.

Approaching two stories tall!!!

Hi there! Writing to see if you can help me identify what just started growing (began in May '10) in the courtyard of our condominium. As far as I can tell, there has never been a flower. What astounds me is the height! i.e. like I said, I started to see it grow in May '10, the pics are from today 9/8/10...almost two stories tall! The "trunk" of it is probably around 2 inches in diameter, the leaves are probably 18-24 inches in diameter.

I'd say it's in the sun almost all day long. I live in Atlanta, GA. Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!

Hello, I have just moved house and there is a shrub/plant at the bottom of the garden in full sun most of the year in quite heavey soil. The garden is not sheltered really and we are 4 miles from the coast in Fife, scotland. It has no flowers yet, nor buds (April) and the leaves arelightly soft to touch, not really waxy and when you rub them they have a smell. It looks like a blackcurrant I think - my partner's granddad had one a while ago, but I am not sure. Be nice if it was edible! Thanks

Hi...I emptied a garden close to the road on my property that was overrun with cedar shrubs. After removing it all I started planting a few things that were deer resistance. Suddenly I had four of these growing and I didn't plant them. The soil seems mostly clay, gets quite dry and the area gets lots of sun. I hope it's not a weed because it looks sort of exotic...but I want to know what it is and how big it will grow. (It's about 2-3 feet tall now) The leaves died off in the winter but it came back this year and grows very well. thank you in advance, for your help.

long story short...I lived here for 3 years, moved away for 4 and someone I knew lived here and didn't do anything with the gardens. Now I'm back and cleaning up the flower beds. This little plant is coming up all over but I'm unsure of what it is. I know it's difficult without seeing the flower, but just wondered if someone had an idea.
It's in full sun. Brantford, Ontario, Canada. I wanted to give some to a friend, since I'll need to thin out the little plants coming up all over in the flower bed, but don't know what to tell them it is. I think I'd better wait until the Fall, after I see what all these little plants are going to grow like.

green leaves in our garden

by Frank Malone
(Gulf Shores, Alabama)

This grew in our winter garden in an unsuccesful seed planting year. We had seeds and ready plants. Ready plants worked well. This plant came from the seed area and we forget what we planted the region. However, it doesn't look like the turnips or cabbage, etc. planted in the area. The family won't let me take it out of the garden until it is identified. It has small looking potato-like buds and it is starting to get new growth leaves as the picture tells. The old leaves are larger and lighter. We imagine the garden started in late November, and this plant was discovered maybe January.

This plant is growing in a swampy area in Virginia.
It appears to have shallow rooted runners.
All were growing in deep shade. The one pictured has 6 heart shaped leaves (less than 2" long). They are evenly splayed on a thin verticle stem and sit about 2-3 inches above ground level. Others sited had less leaves but same structure.

Green Is this a poison or dangerous plant?

by Cherry
(rural La Fontaine, IN USA)

Poison Plant?

Poison Plant?

It has nearly taken over our 20 ft X 50 ft. vegetable garden, but I haven't found it anywhere else on our 3-acre yard or 11 acres of woods. Doesn't look like a vine, but does lay on the ground and appears in groups of many of different sizes/stages (possibly from seeds dropping all the time?). Small, firm berries or seed pods are bright green & turn dark blue/purple-almost black. Once dark, they pop open and contain MANY tiny white seeds.

Monstrous Plant

Monstrous Plant

Hi Doug,
This plant is growing leaps and bounds and I have no idea where it came from. Where the stems come up from the ground are very unusual because they kind of twist and turn.
Also, there seems to be some sort of 'flower' developing at the tips of plant that are interesting.

We have already had a light frost and the plant is still going strong. This plant is growing rapidly and I hope it is not a weed, as I really like the cool-looking foliage.

Thanks for your help.

green Weed or what?

by Nicholas
(Portland, ME)

I'm trying to help an elderly lady whose husband use to tend the flower beds and she doesn't know what is what. If this pic is a weed, I need to be able to tell her so she'll let me yank it and plant something else. I believe the bed gets mostly sun, I don't know anything about soil, the plant lives in Portland, ME. I have yet to see a flower on it. There is a tiny bit of another mystery plant with a purple flower on the lower left but for now I just want to know what the thing is in the center of the pic. Thanks very much for any info you can offer.

This plant is growing in a garden that gets sun most of the day. The stems are woody and have a fuzzy covering on them. At the base of each leaf there is a little black "ball" that may be a seed. These pics were taken around Memorial Day. The tallest stem is now about 3' tall and the leaves are getting closer to each other as the plant gets taller. There still are no flowers as of June 16th.

Small rosettes, lime to bright green--in fall, overwinter with bronzed areas. leaves are average 1-2 inches--3 in at largest; serrated, half moon shape. longest leaf stalk is 3-4 inches so low to ground. Havent yet seen it flower unless so tiny theyre unnoticeable.

these popped up last spring in midst of other perennials and I left them to "see" what developed.
at first thought "creeping charlie" but not an exact fit IMO. Then maybe a "campanula" but again not really.

would love to know what I have and if I should corral or pull out!!

pics are 3-25-10 in central NJ so at start of spring and theyre already growing wildly. Theyre in a partially shaded, well tended area-suburban. thanks!!

green leaves plum fruit

by Kathrine Jenkins
(Ulm, Montana)

Maybe a plum

Maybe a plum

I purchased this bush about 5 years ago when it was about a foot tall. The insert said it was a Oregon plum. It is now about four foot tall, growing in sandy soil on the north end of the deck so it is shaded from noon til about 3 pm. Blooms about the same time as the tulips with pinky white flowers about a half inch across, I think with five petals, slightly cupped. The fruit looks like a blueberry but there is only one seed and it looks like and is just a bit bigger than a tomato seed-the seed is right above the 3 3/4". Don't have much taste to them and none of the birds or animals around here eat them. Bark is reddish brown and does look like the other plum I have in the yard. Thanks for any assist you can give in identifying this bush.

Green Early Spring Grower

Tell us about where the plant is growing. (city, town, state/province)

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tell us what conditions the plant is growing in (sun/shade, soil condition)

Right now, the spot is in mostly full sun, as the trees have not leafed out yet. The location will be nearly full shade later on though. Soil condition is relatively good - good drainage, moderate organic matter. Backyard had been neglected for at least two years prior to me moving in (unit was vacant). I'm still a good bit before the last frost date - in fact, these little plants have withstood a few doses of ice and light snow thus far.

Tall green stalk grows fast-now over 7' tall!

photo taken around 7-10 days out of the ground

Bought older 50s home with this tall green stalk plant that has multipled. It's planted in a border between hydrangea and gardenia bushes. It has some sort of reddish orange berries or flowers as it gets later in the growing season. This photo was taken when it was about a week out of the ground. It is now over 7' tall about 14 days later. The stalks are approx. 1" diameter at the bottom. It starts with leaves just at the top and as it grows branches with more leaves appear. The expansion of this plant looks like it came from root based growth -(rhizomes?) Hope someone can help with this one. We are in our 50s and have never seen anything like it. Thanks!

Green Weed or Perennial ?

by Susan
(Argyle, NY)

I cannot identify this plant. I planted many perennials 2 years ago in a sunny spot. This plant has come up looking like it was deliberately planted, but for the life of me, I have no idea what it is. It has also spread to other parts of my garden. I believe last year, I yanked out most of it because I thought it was a weed, but I can't find other weeds that look like this one, so I am thinking that perhaps I should wait to see if anyone can identify it. It's early June. I live in the mountains an hour north of Albany, NY. It has not flowered yet and is already getting taller than my irises. Is it a weed or perennial? Thanks for taking the time to help me!!!!! (Sorry the photos are sideways; I couldn't figure out how to edit them.)

Green plant possibly green flower

top view view of berries

I have some plants that grow from bulbs aprox. 3 ft. tall. The leaves look like they could represent 2 hands or the leaves grow in an arch shape on top of the main stem. From the center of the stem will grow a cluster of berries that are 1st green then later turn red. I've never seen a flower on the plant just the berries that are at 1st covered up with a thin leaf shoot that dies and exposes the berry ball. Soon after they turn red the plant dies back. I 1st thought it to be a Jack in the Pulpit but after looking at pictures realized it isn't quite the same. They grow more baby plants every year. What is this pretty plant?
