This picture is of a weed. I've named the weed "Bad Mamma Jamma" because I feel I'd need to bring an army to get rid of her. The leaves are covered in thorns, as are the buds before they bloom. When the buds bloom, its a lavender color.

purple flowers heart shaped leaves

by Teresa
(Ackley, Iowa)

Mystery plant by pond

Mystery plant by pond

This plant is a mystery. It is growing by a small man-made pond in our yard in Iowa (we live in the country). The bottom leaves are heart- shaped with jagged edges. These leaves grow toward the bottom of the plant on the stems and little branches that grow from the stems. At the top of the plant, there are oval shaped "leaves" that appear to have 5-6 seeds (maybe they aren't seeds, but they are definite "bumps" that appear to be seeds) enclosed within the leaves. They are green with a purple tinge to them, the edge is smooth and purplish. Some of the ovals are small and some are quite large. The plant has small purple flowers similar in shape to the individual flowers on phlox. It is a mystery to us. Pleas help us identify this plant

I have lost the name tag for this clematis, and I would like to identify it in order to properly prune it. I have discovered that I have been improperly pruning all my clematis plants, resulting in nothing but lush green foliage. It is time to get some flowers. (Okay this one did flower, so I must have done something correctly).

Thorny Plant With Purple Flowers

The plant looks like some sort of thorn bush, maybe four feet tall or so. The picture was taken in Greensburg PA.. The plant is located partially up the hill, along with a lot of other brush. It gets relatively good light, and most of the water is probably runoff from further up the hill. I think that the flower might not be fully bloomed in the picture, but the extremely spiky bulb with the purple sticking out is clearly visible.

Purple Perennial

by Kathy
(Stonington, MI, USA)

This beautiful flower is the the yard of a home we just purchased. It blooms in early June on 1 to 2 foot long stems above 1 foot bushy plant with lovely bright green leaves. The flowers hang on the stems like bells. After flowering, seed pods form with tiny bright green seeds inside, which turn black once dried. If left on stem, the pods dry, split open and drop the seeds, self germinating. This plant is located in Stonington, Michigan, near Escanaba, Michigan (the Upper Peninsula) which is roughly about 3 hours from Green Bay Wisconsin and right on the northern shore of Lake Michigan, very rural area. It is in shade in the morning and full sun in the afternoon/evening. Soil is very rich, brown, well draining, used to be farm soil. Summer temperatures are rarely above 90 degrees and winter termperatures are usually well below freezing with lots and lots of snow. Thank you so much for your help, I love this plant!

Bluish-purple bee-friendly flower with deeply lobed leaves

Bluish-purple bee-friendly flower

Bluish-purple bee-friendly flower

Bluish-purple bee-friendly flower

First of all, hearty thanks to all who are helping us identify this intriguing bluish-purple flower. The flowers came out of a package of mixed seeds labelled something like "for attracting bees", or for "the bee friendly garden." Seeded in a sunny location, the plants grew quickly and well, and have proven to be hardy, needing little care. If not bent over, they are about 4 feet tall. From morning to night the blossoms are literally covered with bumble bees (not butterflies so much). Only in the cooler temperatures of early autumn have the bumble bees been visiting less frequently. The plant may be a wildflower, and possibly an annual, evidently well-suited to our climate north of Fort St. John in northeastern British Columbia, Canada. The plants have not frozen yet, though the temperature has been minus 2 degrees Celsius.

I committed the beginner gardener's folly of purchasing a plant without knowing what it is. The store owner couldn't remember the name of the plant but told me that it is a perennial that requires sun or part sun. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Zone 5b or 6a).

The plant has fleshy stems like a succulent and its leaves are green on top but a purple-black underneath.

Is there anyone who can tell me what this is?

Mystery Purple Flower

I don't know the soil but it grows in mostly sun. The flower is purple which I could also send a pic of but this pic shows the funny bud parts the best so I'm hoping it will help most with identification. The man who knew them has died so I can't ask him if the leaves are intentionally kind of laying over a metal frame/cone thing that's lying on it's side. I'd like to know if I should remove or adjust the frame thing to provide better or less support. Thanks very much for any info anyone can offer.

The plant has a very thick stem, one inch at the base which is rhubarb colored, melting into green on the way up. Flowers are gorgeous and orchid-like. I have a lreger version of this pic, struggled to size it down to meet site requirements.

They are growing beneath sporadically underneath some very large pine trees that cast a heavy shade all day long on the growing area, but it does receive morning light. They have survived very well without any care even through our hottest and driest summers here. They are pretty, but I'm not sure if they are a weed or a beneficial perennial. Bud Root system

I was wandering if you all could help me figure out what this flower is. We moved here during the winter and have not seen it bloom yet. I have a lot that are falling into an eroding ditch. They seem to have a root system (also shown) that has multiple plants growing on them. Can I replant them by breaking the root between the plants or is it a lost cause?

Vase shape plant with Beautiful Purple Flower Spikes

by Linda
(Port Angeles, WA, USA)

Tall Vase Shape - perfect in front of my Bombast Poppies

Tall Vase Shape - perfect in front of my Bombast Poppies

Tall Vase Shape - perfect in front of my Bombast Poppies The Bees and Hummers love the flowers

Received this plant from a neighbor last year. Only grew foliage last year to about a foot. This year blossomed into a beautiful vase shaped plant with purple flower spires. Thought it was a Euphorbia last year because of the linear leaves around the stem but was told no. Yet no one has told me what it is.
It is perfect in front of the ugly lower foliage of my poppies
BTW, someone asked for seeds of the poppy, google Bombast Poppy and you shouldn't have any problem finding it.

this gets about 6 ft tall. thin pole like stalk, lots of pretty light purple blooms. Anybody know what it is? I got a piece from a friend and put it in dirt, it rooted, I kept it in a pot inside all winter then planted after any chance of frost. It blooms in the am but blooms go away in the heat of the afternoon. Doesnt bloom at night.

Purple perennial in North Carolina

by Annette
(central North Carolina)

This is a plant that I saw growing against a wall near a restaurant in Chapel Hill. It dies back in winter and spreads by sending out new shoots along the ground. It was growing out onto the sidewalk so I broke off a piece of root and stem, and the picture you see is from that, a few months after being planted in my garden. It likes sunshine, grows upright (to about 3 feet tall) and sends up straight stalks with elongated leaves (almost like an oleander leaf). The stem is a dark red/purple and the flowers are mauve and cluster on stalks off the main stem. It seems to bloom later in the year (it's blooming now). I'd love to know what it is!
