Mystery Red/Yellow trumpet-like flower

by Sandy
(Mosinee, WI)

This plant is about 12" high and is growing in partial sun in zone 4 (central Wisconsin). Its blooms look like trumpets, and they will open and close seemingly at random. What's strange is at the base of each plant (I have two) there is a walnut-sized hard "ball" protruding from the ground. When I first bought them from the greenhouse they were in unmarked pots, the clerk didn't know what they were, and I bought them thinking they might be datura -- not! I can email you the picture of the "ball" if you like.

Red Hummingbird Food

by Grammadot
(Barto,PA)

Cardinal Flower and .........

Cardinal Flower and .........

The elderly owner of beautiful old fashioned gardens at the NJ shore thanked us for buying Lobelia/Cardinal Flower plants; he said their beauty almost wiped them out, endangering the hummingbirds who depended upon them to fuel their trip South in the Fall. They have narrow leaves and the similar red flowering plant, which blooms a litte later and was included in a mixture for hummingbirds has multiple branches, no encapsulated seeds, and leaves wider at the stem end.

Does someone know what this plant is called?

Bush/Plant with red berries

by Kelli
(Ohio)

This is growing in our back yard in town along a fence line. There are two different shaped leaves on the same stem and berries growing along the stem that tend to turn black/purple after ripening from red.

I have a couple of other pics if it would help in identifying based on leaf variation or how the berries are attached up the stem.

This is a plant my mom got at a plant sale but she did not get the name of it. It grows over six feet tall, has very large leaves with these very delicate, lacy, little flowers on the top and it smells very sweet, it attracts honey bees like there is no tomorrow. I just would love to know the name of this plant.

Charlie Flowers

These little dark coral flowers come up in early spring; thrive in shade; resemble grass until blooms appear; have 6 petals on bloom, long slender grasslike leaves, and little round, bumpy seed pods. I have searched and searched the internet and cannot identify them. Before my father-in-law, Charlie, passed away he had a back yard full. So, we named them Charlie Flowers. Please help.

Burgandy plant with brush-like flowers

Burgand Brush Plant (?)

Burgand Brush Plant (?)

This flower came up in a flower bed in which I had planted an old packet of old-fashion mixture. It was not there last year. The plant stands approx. three ft. high. It started with burgandy leaves and then the flowers sprouted from the middle of the plant. I have a picture of the plant before blooming which you can review upon request, if that is helpful. I live in a rural area of Zone 5 & the plant gets full sun daily planted in regular top soil. The flowers remind me of bristles on a brush but are small flowers with little fragrance. I would appreciate any help that you can give me in identifying this plant.

Reddish flowers

by Lisa
(Wellesley, MA)

This is a plant which grows in an area receiving part sun, part shade. It's by a pine tree and pops up in front of junipers. It has a stalk-like stem and has green, furryish leaves. The plant is probably about a foot tall, maybe taller. The flowers (a reddish-purple) are just now blooming. As the stalk gets taller, the bottom gets bare of the leaves. However, leaves are still there a few inches above the ground. It receives water from the irrigation system, as well as from rain. I have more pictures if needed (e.g., one showing the entire plant).

I live in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

Red Rose sold at WalMart

I wanted Morden Blush .. this rose is on it's own root stalk .. seems resistant to problems but it is a FLAMING deep fuchsia colour .. way too bright for what I wanted. BUT .. I would like to know what it may be ? All my pictures of this rose are too bright because of the feed back of its colour. So this picture is going to look a bit dull compared to what it looks like .. I swear you could see this rose a mile away ! Could it be a Morden "anything" ?

It's a sun/part shade bed in Lancaster, Ohio. The plant has a red stem and complex, red rimmed leaves . I haven't had luck getting anything to grow in this flowerbed (not that I'm a great gardener) so I'm worried it may be poison ivy or something along those lines. Any ideas what it is? Thanks :)
