All Tops No Bottoms

(baton rouge La.)

Beets,Turnips,carrots,radishes Great tops no root.

Doug says you don't say anything about how or where you're growing these plants.

Full sun? Critical.

Clay soil? Again, small root crops

Heavy feeding? Too high a nitrogen level will produce great tops but smaller root on these plants

Nutrient deficiency? Sometimes a deficiency of some nutrient will create a leaf problem that points out a symptom - check those out this year.

Planting dates: some of these are cool weather crops - if you're trying to grow them in LA heat, you may not have as much success.

Those are a few of the reasons off the top of my head that might create the small harvest condition. Without knowing a whole bunch more about those things, I really can't help. But they will give you some guidelines for getting this problem identified.

I had the same problem this year with my radishes. I have a small veggie garden along side my garage that gets full sun but is protected from the wind. my radishes however had these huge green tops but nothing growing underneath. I cut the tops off to see if that would help, it seems to be helping more energy going to grow the radish. the tops are coming back with leaves. I will let you know how it turns out.
