Bare spots

It's April 19, and I have lots of bare spots in my lawn.
What can I do to have grass growing in these spots instead of weeds?

Doug says to use a little magic - :-) You need to sprinkle each bare spot with grass seed. Do this so the seed are just touching each other - without bare spaces between them or overlapping to get the right amount.

Then *barely* cover them with compost or composted manure from a garden shop if you don't have your own compost. This stops the birds from eating the seed and feeds the growing plants

Keep damp. These tiny seeds will shoot out of the ground when the soil warms up and your lawn will be good and thick in this area.

Good luck.

I started with a lawn that was mostly crabgrass 3 years ago. I got Doug's Ebook on lawns and now my neighbors are asking me how I did it!
Your bare spots could be grubs - I had them last year - I put down lots of milky spore this spring and so far my lawn is gorgeous. I reaally recomend Doug's book.

Hi there about your bare spots, not sure if this is the case but we had bare spots, well places where the grass turned brown. We had no idea what was causing it (we were thinking it might have been to dry) till we did some landscaping and had to lift some of the grass. When we got to the brown patches we found that the grass lifted easily. When we pulled it up there was white June bug Larvae under it they had eating all the roots beneath the brown patches. There were hundreds of them. so if you have brown patches try grabbing a handful of the grass and see if it is loose from the soil or try removing a patch of it to see if it is attached if not there could be these nasty little(well fat )Larvae under there just having a party. Hope this helps someone . Not sure what time of the year it was aprox. july/August.
