Best variety

I live in western Minnesota. please recommend the best variety for my area that would give me crop all at once for picking over a couple of weeks. thank you.

Doug says the people to check with for a best variety of raspberry are the local hort extension folks (for all regions of the U.S.) that specialize in fruit production. They'll have lists that work for your specific region.

One of the other problems here is that there are different tastes and berry-condition issues (I used to grow them commercially - or at least I tried) to make a single recommendation. For example, 'Latham' is a great old plant but tends to get viral problems. 'Boyne' is better and more vigorous but the berry is hard and to my tastebuds, more like cardboard than 'Latham'. But 'Latham' crumbles very quickly.

You can see the problem. Find the berry that does best for your area according to your local hort folks - then use it as your main berry - and experiment with others.

Yes, it means you have to sort out some stuff for yourself here (sorry) but specific varieties for all parts of North America is not something I keep track of (hard enough doing it for my own region) :-)

Raspberrie Growing
by: Cheryl

Hello,
I live in Ontario, Canada about 15 minutes from Lake Erie. I just wanted to know the best way to keep a healthy harvest in our climate. Mine seem like they are doing really good so far. But I am not sure they are getting enough sun as they are leaning towords the East. I have not staked or tide them yet this year should I?? If so what is the best thing to use in order not to damage the cane over time. Also what is your experience with Yellow Raspberries?? Have you ever grown them ( they are called Autum Berries ) and is this a good kind to grow in our climate?? Is there any other kinds or colours to try?? I like to try all sorts of different things and stay unique!
Just to let you know that I always know where my 5 year old is during Raspberrie Season "in the Garden" so we all agree it's the best fruit!!
Thank you,
Cheryl :)
