Building Raised Garden Beds

by Doug
(in his garden somewhere)

I think the video is pretty self-explanatory about how I constructed this inexpensive raised bed. And yes, we'll probably rebuild them in a few years but that's ok because by then I'll know where I want them to be.

Fairly inexpensive but with our shallow soils, we can now grow darn near anything in these.

To answer the other person, I think raised beds add some visual appeal to your garden as they can be built in many shapes and they raise some plants above the others. I put some bulbs that have to be lifted for the winter so I can find them all easily when time to dig them out. They are easier for some people to reach so they can still garden when older, or disabled. If you really think about it, there are many reasons to use raised planting beds.

Ok, that would explain that one.

I have two inches of "soil" over top of shale limestone.

Next question. :-)

I'm trying to figure out why you would go to that trouble as opposed to just planting in the ground.
