Butterfly Plants

Butterfly plants are for the most part, perennial flowers. Although you’ll find them on annuals, they are genetically set to prefer a range of perennials. This list includes most of the common perennials and a few bulbs that will attract butterflies to your garden. One thing you might want to note is that butterfly plants are not only for adult butterflies but they are for immature larval forms – can you say ugly, plant-eating caterpillar. Before you can have a butterfly flitting around the blossom, you have to have a caterpillar munching on the leaves. So relax if you see one chomping down and having lunch. Understand there is a butterfly somewhere inside that caterpillar. It is also a great idea to have a source of water for your butterflies. This can be as simple as a well-maintained muddy area (dig out some soil, lay down a plastic bag and refill to hold the moisture) or as complex as a pond with log lying in it (some place to give butterflies and others a place to sit beside the water). So enjoy the butterfly plants but do understand that some of them will be sacrificed to the caterpillars.
