can bulbs be placed in freezer to simulate dormancy

Doug says no. Putting any bulb in the freezer will freeze it solid. Simply popping a bulb into the freezer without having allowed it to perpare itself will kill it.
This is not a good thing unless the bulb has gone through a natural "getting ready for winter" cycle and has enough anti-freeze in its tissues to survive being frozen in the ground. This normally happens gradually in the fall as the ground slowly gets colder and colder. The all-at-once shock will simply kill off bulbs.
