Can I grow Onions and Garlic together in my vegetable garden?

Doug says - I don't see why you *can't* but I doubt you'll want to. The thing you have to understand is that garlic is an overwintering crop. Plant in the fall.

On the other hand, most onions are spring crops that are planted in the spring. (there are some overwintered onion crops but these are mostly harvested as green onions).

So you *can* do it but your timing is going to be a problem.

As a sidenote - you can plant garlic very early in the spring and you'll get a small crop. The problem with planting onion sets at that early date is that the sets might very well rot. If you plant the garlic at the same time as the onions, you won't get a garlic crop.

Hope that helps.

I started some garlic cloves near walla walla onion transplants around the end of march in Seattle and the garlic tops grew well, but neither the garlic itself or the onions grew much at all. After some time I decided to completely separate the two. The garlic formed small bulbs and half the onions were tiny when they started to flower. I have a few half sized walla wallas now. I don't ever want to try them together again.
