Can Trumpet Vine be grown in containers?

by Tmara

Would a Praecox colored Trumpet Vine grow if planted in a container? If yes, what size container should be used and will this stunt the growth? I have a smaller area that I would like to cover, so if growth is stunted, that would work - but would flowering be affected?

Thanks much!

Doug says that any vine can be planted and grown in a container. So that answer is yes. The larger the pot the better - this is still a vigorous plant so a 14-18 inch pot is going to be needed or you'll be watering twice a day (even this large will likely take a daily watering)

The main question however is can you overwinter it and you don't say where you live. So - the roots can't get to 5F. If your temperatures go to 5F in the winter, then the vine roots will likely die in a container. Given the nature of this beast, you won't move it from it's location without cutting it down - so it will likely stay in place. The 5F is what you have to decide about.

Other than that the normal rules of growing a container apply
