Can tulips resprout in same season?
new sprouts
Someone gave me some potted tulips. The flowers wilted and fell off and the leaves have turned yellow and dry. Even the stalks ahve turned a pale yellow. But I noticed that there seems to be new very green little sprouts shooting up from the bulbs. Will these grow into new flowers? Should I trim down the dying leaves and stalks to make room for these new sprouts or should I leave them there? I have uploaded a photo of what the new sprouts look like.
Doug says that it looks as if your bulb leaves yellowed and wilted/fell off from too little water - and the bulb is trying to send up new shoots to create a leaf to keep it alive.
It will not flower again. The bulb requires a lot of energy to store to produce a bud and then chilled to induce it to form/grow. What it looks like to me is that it is trying to form new leaves in order to survive.
If you put it in your garden, it may not even live unless it can replenish itself.
Personally, I'd toss them unless you want a challenge. :-)
