I am no expert in what grows wild in Illinois, never having been anywhere near there (yet), but yes, I believe it grows wild in various places further south than my much more northerly location.

It is a type of Tradescantia, probably Tradescantia virginiana (Virginia Spiderwort). A wild version of a common garden flower. Tradescantia often goes by common names of Spiderwort, Widow's Tears or Dayflower. It is an easy to grow plant...in fact some types can be a bit difficult to get rid of in some locations. Likes moisture.
