After the blooms are gone is it OK to bend the leaves over and tie them back until they too are about dead. I would just like to make them somewhat more pleasent to look at during that time.

Doug says no. This is an old trick but it really does stop the plant from adding strength to the bulbs. I know your grandmother did it (or you see other gardeners doing it) but they're weakening their bulbs by doing so.
