we live in Massachusetts, my friend replanted this plant from a wooded area and insists its a plant. it grew rapidly and has just flowered

Dame's Rocket looks a lot like phlox except they have a different number of petals and bloom at different times. Dame's Rocket has been classified as an invasive in several areas because of it's prolific reseeding and aggressive squeezing out of native plants. Make sure what you have.

you get to pick whether it is a weed or not! It is commonly called Dame's Rocket latin name Hesperis matronalis. Originally from Europe, long since escaped gardens to woods and roadsides. I think it has recently been classified in Mass. as an invasive.
