Earth Worms

How can I get rid of earth worms that are under my lawn and are destroying it. The lawn has lumps all over and is difficult to walk on without shoes, and mows unevenly.

Doug says that earthworms are the single best thing you can have in your lawn. Frankly, they're doing more good than any other creature in your soil and you want to encourage them.

Let me suggest you mow taller. That way the mounds won't show. Let me suggest you rake the lawn heavily in the spring to remove and spread any castings (great fertilizer). Low spots can be filled in with a 50:50 mix of compost and top soil.

Earth Worms

added note: I know how valuable earth worms are and are happy to see them in my vegetable and flower gardens. Bugs do not bother me, andI make sure the worms are covered up with dirt when digging up plants. My mower is as tall as it can get. I will try the added soil in the spring. I guess the damage that is done to the lawn and the unevenness of it is hard to picture, but it is extremely noticable and uncomfortable to walk on. I love walking on lawns with bare feet - always have, but this one is not comfortable, and I would like to get it back the way it was.

Research time?
by: Kate

Earth worms are extremely valuable to the
earth. I know some people who have littled
experience with gardening tend to cringe at the sight of bugs, worms etc.It might be a good idea if you did some research into how all of these
critters figure into the natural world and how they help in the garden in various and delightful ways. I think once you find out what they actually do you will be less likely to want to get rid of them. Like bees, without worms there would be no gardens and no gardens means no food for the world.
