fast growing vines!

by Andrew
(New Orleans LA)

hello,

I have a unique situation in which i need to cover several large vertical nets (about 6 10'x6' sections) as best i can in 7 week's time (now until 8/29). the location in new orleans. i have plenty of soil and access to sun. what vine would you recommend to attempt this feat?

thanks for your help

andrew

Doug says that in 7 weeks, there's not a vine that's going to come close to getting up to 6-7'. An annual - something like morning-glory would come the closest. Nasturtiums would cover the bottom fairly well. If you do plant in the ground, plant the seed closely and feed weekly to keep them growing upright and fast.

What you might consider doing seeing if you can attach pots to the nets themselves and then plant into the pots (use a light peat based soil in the pots to lessen the weight). Use a variety of nasturtiums, morning glory, sweet pea (although your fall heat may be too high for these) in the pots to cover the fence. Have multiple pots all over the net to get the appearance of covering. You will have to rig some kind of support for the weight of the pot (you don't say what or how strong the netting is) if the net is fragile.

But know that no single plant is going to get up that high in 7 weeks. You're now in the decorating business and you can do it with a little misdirection of the eye and multiple pots.

Good luck.

staggered root heighths
by: Cakes

great idea!!!

just thought i'd add that if it is a vertical surface and the grower is willing to stagger root heighth then, the plantings would not have to BE vines. They could be anything as long as they had an appropriately spaced neighbor. Wall murals of plantings are going to be the next rage i think. have seen a few great ones.
