getting rid of raspberries

by Virginia

The previous owner grew an unbounded raspberry patch in our backyard, and I pulled out all the roots from the patch, but it spread underground and the plants are coming up in the lawn. Is there any way to stop them other than digging up all the sod?

Doug says it's a pain for sure but the only way to control them once they're established like this is to pull, pull and pull some more.

Or you might try simply cutting them to the row length you want with a lawn mower. This doesn't stop them from trying but it does control them.

Rototilling and removing all canes/roots etc also works.

This is an ongoing problem and it will be necessary to continue whatever control method you pick as long as you have the canes - they are indeed a spreading plant.

I control mine by mowing regularly along the rows. It doesn't stop them (as I said) but it does restrain them.

Thanks Doug, I think I got it all pulled up out of the garden bed now, but I guess I have to mow more regularly cause they do grow fast into the grass. It's almost as bad as bindweed!
