Grass plant ID
by: Grambo

I just moved to a new home, and have spent many hours trying to ID plants. One I found is called a Spiderwort plant. It looks a lot like yours. And is apparently invasive. I haven't seen it through the whole year yet, but, I am really enjoying it so far..
Hope you can ID yours soon!

This is nut grass - not your friend. It will spread like crazy and keep other stuff (like good grass) from growing, simply because it shades them & steals nutrients. My humble advice: before those seed heads mature, get rid of it.

I think that is a nut sedge. It's really hard to get rid of and it spreads. Definitely a weed. It's best to dig it out because it has little "nuts" on its roots and they will sprout a new plant if left in the ground (which happens if you just pull it).

i was wondering the same thing, as this popped up in my garden, also. seems very difficult to remove, so i thought it was just some type of flower! does anyone really know what it is?

To weed or not?

I find grasses particularly difficult to identify accurately. They can require a grass specialist and the use of a microscope.

I am dealing with a good number of grass species and other interesting items in a neglected new-to-me garden right now. A challenge to decide which to keep and which to gradually eliminate. I am certain more will go on my remove list as time goes by. You will need to observe carefully and make the same decision. If it is only one plant there is no huge rush, just wait and see what it does and how it looks.

If you like the look of this particular grass and it turns out to be easy to pull and doesn't seed like mad you might want to keep all or some of it. If it seeds like mad...and those ARE seed heads...and it doesn't appeal to you, then it becomes a weed. What is a weed is always the eye of the beholder. Some people value and deliberately keep dandelions and other plants considered by most to be invasive. Sorry, but in my opinion, there are no easy set rules on this...it's your call.
