I believe Anita is correct. I googled plants with spiky fruit and there are several good websites that show the wild cucumber and describe your picture to a "t"! It's a fascinating plant. The article says that the root underneath can weigh 100 lbs. or more and is called a manroot. It is the first plant that will come back if there is fire in the area. I love your picture, too.

This looks like a greener, plumper healthier version of the same wild cucumber vine we have growing here in New York's woodlands. Foliage also resembles ours.
