Poisonous Sumac
by: Lisa in MI

That is Poison Sumac (contact dermatitis) and if you are allergic to it you will break out w/a rash - like poison ivy or poison oak - especially if you touch it's foilage when it is red (in the fall). I would not drink or eat anything made from this tree/plant and do not burn it, either, as the smoke is dangerous for those who are allergic.

IT LOOKS LIKE A ''TREE OF HEAVEN''. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT IS A SUMAC, BUT THOSE TREES ARE COMMON IN TENNESSEE. MY GRANDFATHER HAD SOME IN HIS YARD IN CALIFORNIA. THEY GROW UP TO 100 FOOT TALL, AND THEY GROW FAST AND SEEDS FLY OFF LIKE LEAVES.

thank you

Thank you for identifying the sumac.

sumac

That is a sumac. If the stems are fuzzy it is staghorn sumac, if not it is smooth sumac. Rhus typhina or Rhus glabra. Staghorn can get up to 25' tall, though might stay a bit shorter in full sun. Smooth is about half as tall. Both will colonize. Here in massachusetts they have gorgeous fall color. And while I've not tried it, the fruits can be used to make a beverage.
