Honeysuckle Shrub not flowering
I have a four year old shrub that is in sunlight all day and is approx. 3 to 4 ft tall, and 2 to 3 ft wide. I must admit it has had very little fertilizer and has never been trimmed. Except for no flowers it is a very healthy looking plant. What steps would you suggest to move this plant along to flowering. Thank-you.
Doug says that plants don't bloom because they're under stress (for the most part). So, if it's not fed, that's a stressor (although in most cases, this isn't an issue with this plant). If it's allowed to dry out too much, it won't produce blooms. If it's on the edge of a lawn that's fed with high-nitrogen lawn food, then it may be getting too much food so it grows great leaves but no flowers.
The most important "trick" (after making sure it's fed and watered properly) is to give it a pruning.
In the early spring, give the plant a bit of a pruning (a haircut will work the first year- take a bit off the top all around) :-) The new wood should bloom for you. Don't worry about hurting it - you can't (you can cut this plant to the ground and it will come back).
After that, you're going to have to learn about rejuvenation pruning to bring plants back to full growth and blooming. This is going to be an ongoing thing with your honeysuckle .
Good luck
Doug
