Houseplants

I grow a fair number of houseplants because here in Canada one doesn’t get to garden for too many months outdoors.

As I write, my Musa basjoo banana tree is sitting next to the office window recovering from an attack of spider mites while the lime and lemon trees have been shifted to a south facing window in preparation for increased light levels and flowering (I like fresh lemons in my summer drinks)

Questions - ??

I get a lot of houseplant questions and while I try to answer them, I confess I’m more of an outdoor gardener than a houseplant type.

What I’ve done here is give you the basics of plant care that will work with just about any kind of indoor plant.

Most Often Asked Question

The most often asked question is, "My plant is dying, what do I do?”

The simple answer is with a watering can as the vast majority of indoor problems stem from making a mistake with watering.  But what most people want to know is how often do I water or how much water does it need? These questions are fully dependent on the indoor environment and the plants themselves (not to mention the kind of soil and the type of pot).  See the video below to check your watering habits.

Here’s a houseplants watering rule of thumb (or finger more precisely) that has worked for me for years both indoors and outdoors.

Poinsettia Care

Poinsettia care is important at Christmas time if you want to keep this plant blooming properly.

Getting Poinsettia to bloom again means following clear guidelines. Good luck!
