Doug says that grass requires at least 2-3 inches of topsoil if it's going to grow properly. End of story. You will never have a good lawn on hard pan and rocks. You'll either have to buy it or make it yourself by adding unbelievable amounts of organic matter and digging it in etc etc to make your own topsoil. Trust me, buying it in is far cheaper and easier.
