Hyacinth Bean Vine

What is the best way and time to plant hyacinth beans? I live in Zone 5.

Doug says indoors in mid-March at 2 beans per 4-inch pot. This is a slow growing annual bean that will not bloom until very, very late in the fall from mid to late May outdoor planting. Earlier plantings into cold ground will simply rot off.

If you won't want flowers, then plant them as soon as the ground is warm enough and all danger of frost has passed.

Planting is the same as for any bean - put it about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, cover with soil and keep damp and warm.

Loved this vine
by: carol

I had never heard of this vine before this past spring. My husband gave me an arbor and wanted something to climb. I planted this in late spring and by summer the vine had climbed all the way to the top. Little did I know that in a few short weeks there would also be beautiful purple flowers which then turn into bean pods. Will certainly plant again next spring in my zone 5 garden.

Purple Hyacinth Bean beauty

For the last 3 years at our plant sale we've given away small tulle wrapped Hyacinth bean seeds as a thank you for their monetary donation for the plants to our German garden club. Everyone who came back the following years raved over the vine's beauty.

LOVE THIS VINE!

In North Texas this is a very fast growing vine that will cover about a 6-8 foot span of fence. Its a heavy vine so give it plenty of support. Mine didnt flower until September last year, but wow, the blooms were gorgeous!
I put mine out in March (zone 7b) and it stayed until November. I loved it so much that I collected seeds from the pods and replanted several this year. (PS. It appreciates some good compost)
