Growing Ladys Mantle

Alchemilla or Ladys Mantle is one of the most versatile plants in the perennial border or perennial cottage garden. We're talking a rock hardy plant with some outstanding features.

Why Grow This Plant

The leaves are amazing. They are a delightful shade of green but they hold water in a central area and glisten in the morning dew or after a rain. Worth growing if only for the fairyland they create with their damp leaves.

The flowers are a massive spray and held above the foliage. But, they are chartreuse. This greenish-yellow is not every gardener's favorite color, and if you like it - you love it but....

In the landscape it can be grown as a single plant or even as an edging.

It makes an excellent container plant and adds season-long foliage interest to containers.

Growing Conditions

Full sun or part shade. You can put this one almost anywhere except deep shade where it will get floppy.

Hardiness is an easy USDA zone 4, possibly down into 3.

It doesn't like clay soils but it will tolerate them for a few years until it gets a very wet winter.

I've never seen pest problems with Ladys Mantle

Alchemilla Propagation

Divide this plant in the early spring for the best and easiest results. A fall division also works.

Lady's Mantle does grow from seed but slowly.
