Keeping Grandma's Garden Going On!
by: blkittell

My grandmother moved out of her Missouri country home about 30 years ago. I kept some of the seed from her Garden Balsam and have planted it in all of my gardens (I have lived in 3 different houses in Illinois since taking the seed). It is a great way to remember a wonderful grandmother with a REALLY green thumb!

Balsam
by: Barbara

This is sold in annual seed packets and the name they use is balsam.
It is low growing, likes shady or semi shady areas, is moisture loving, and easy to grow, and is a lovely fill plant. Hummingbirds love it!
Jewel weed is the wild version and grows much higher.

A Lady's Slipper by any other name...........

Thanks to Anonymous for such great info. I save the seeds and use them for "fill-ins" for bare spots in my haphazard flowerbed mix.

Impatiens balsamina
by: Anonymous

Other common and old-fashioned names for this plant are Jumping Betty, Touch-Me-Not, and Poor Man's Orchid. Its botanical name is impatiens balsamina. It reseeds readily, almost like a weed, but the roots are shallow so it's easy to pull out if it's in the wrong place in the garden. It transplants easily. Pinch the tops back if you want a bushier plant. It grows best in full sun in zone 5.
