lumpy lawn

by Janet

Yes my lawn is full of weeds and moss, but I'm getting those under control. what I can't control is the extreme lumpiness! There are some serious dips, but mostly it's like I'm walking over rocks buried not so deep. Now in fact, there are lots of rocks buried DEEP, and not so fun as I develop my garden beds. But I don't really think that is the situation in the grass beds, and what rocks I find are usually about 6-8" deep, so I'm probably not feeling them. Anyway, too much information! Can I fix this?

Doug says that sure you can fix it. With this kind of extreme season-long lumpiness simply bring in some topsoil and fill in the holes. The toss some compost and grass seed (about 50:50) so the grass seed is just touching each other onto the new soil. Water.

Spring lumpiness is normally solved by having patience and raking but this kind of structural thing is easily handled with a bit of topsoil.

Its Fixable
by: Moira, Scotland

Yes it is fixable. Just needs a combination of patience, time and effort.

If I was nearer, I'd come give you a hand. Sadly I can only offer a virtual hug as you tackle this yourself. xx

PS If you look up my 'Slate garden' and 'Its a start' photos, you will see we had a similar problem with stones under the grass of our front garden.

Par for the course here. Our town's 1000-year old Celtic Cross was discovered in someone's garden in 1831.
