Moving my garden bulbs

This is a question about moving my garden bulbs.

I'll be moving (from No. VA) in April and wonder if I should dig up my lily, daffodil, and iris bulbs now (December) and plant them when I arrive at the new location (So. VA) in April? Thanks!

Doug says there are several questions/concerns. Storing bulbs over the winter isn't an easy thing - it is much better to dig the bulbs in the spring and move them then (even if in green leaf) because you'll likely lose fewer than if you try to dig and store out of the ground over the winter (they dry out and die fairly easily)

Note that if you sold a property, then flowers are often considered part of the property and can't be legally moved unless it is mentioned in the sale papers.

You might also look at this as a way to get a whole new garden and range of plants. It's a lot of work to dig up bulbs - far easier to purchase new ones. :-)

moira, (i love that name!)
the original poster said she's moving from north virginia to south virginia (same state). however, you raise a good question! i know california is very restrictive re: non-indiginous flora.

I'd be tempted to side with Doug. I have tried keeping bulbs but no luck so far. Unless you know exactly where the bulbs are buried and can move them with soil to a pot, I'd start afresh in your new home. Just one thing, are you allowed to move plants between states?
