Mulching Groundcovers?

Mulching groundcovers - - I have a question about mulch: Do I mulch vinca and ivy? Do they both cover by sending out runners that seed themselves? Doug says Nope, don't bother mulching them. They'll grow up and over top of any mulch you lay down and spread by runners. The runners don't really set seed, they put down roots into the soil to stabilize themselves (and the soil) The only time you might mulch them would be the first year after planting to get them through their first year - but I'd pull it off in the spring. The other use of mulch in this case would be to mulch the ground (to hold the bare soil in place) and then plant the groundcovers through the mulch - allowing them to grow up and over top of the mulch. As the mulch deteriorates, it would not be replaced.
