mums for a wedding in late september

How can I get glorious large flower pots full of mums for my daughter's wedding in late September at our farm?

Doug says - 1) Buy them that way at a local garden center. I say this because you're the bride's parents and you're going to be hassling a lot of other details along the way. Save yourself the worry and grief of having to ensure these plants both look good and grow/flower on time to hit this magic day.

Having said that. The rules for growing mums are contained in the articles on fall mum growing right here Container gardening information is found here.

The trick is to give the plant a large enough container to grow properly, feed it adequately, water it properly, never allowing it dry out, and get the pruning done at the right time.

It's like growing any great plant in a container - it's the same as growing in the ground except it takes a ton more management and attention. So take the rules of growing them in the how-grow article. Either grow them in the ground and transplant to containers or grow them that way in a large enough container with the right soil and fertility.

But my .02 (from experience) is that even I won't try to hit a specific date and ensure my bride that her flowers are going to be spectacular.

Let me know what you decide and what you do.

Transferring some of my daughter's wedding photos to the computer, I remembered your post.

Hope all the preparations are going well. My very best wishes on the day.

Thank you for your advice. I'm sure buying the mums is the wisest choice. It's just that I grew all of the glads for my son's wedding in Aug '03 and now my daughter has asked me to grow her flowers..... I'll probably just follow the instruction and try to get the mums growing and healthy for late Sept and if it doesn't look good..... hello nursery!

While it would be really lovely to provide the Mums for the wedding, I'm with Doug on this one. Use a florist. Do your homework and use a nursery or florist who comes with good feedback.

I had everything in hand or so I thought, for my daughter's wedding in 2001.

Twelve weeks before the date, I slipped on some damp grass and landed awkwardly, breaking my right leg - open fracture tib and fib.

As I struggled to get fit for the wedding albeit I'd still be on crutches, my family and friends pulled together on my behalf. Only thing I was good for was shredding tissue paper for the wedding favour boxes. Wedding day went without a hitch. A happy day, though my outfit, chosen pre-break would have looked better with high heels than flat sandals.

I wish you the best for your own daughters wedding and of course no problems whatsoever.I hope too, should my other daughter ever decide to be married that I will look where I'm putting my feet.
