Harison's Rose?

I am not a rose expert but from your description and picture, I would guess that it could very well be Harison's Rose. It is an old rose bred in the 1700's in New York and travelled across the continent with the pioneers. Very tough and now grows wild with no attention in many places.

When people think that roses are difficult and challenging to grow they certainly aren't thinking of this rose. Also known as the "Yellow Rose of Texas" in the song.
