Perennial Garden Flowers

The world of perennial garden flowers is inhabited by those who believe that "friends don't let friends plant annuals". And while this is no doubt a bit tongue in cheek, perennial gardens raise a passion in gardeners that few other plants can match.

For example, the thought of cottage garden plants inspire our gardening dreams and we all want one of those masterpiece gardens (see below for my take on those). When it comes to designing perennial beds, our gardening ancestors used simple plants with great effect. My understanding of the cottage garden is that anybody can grow one - you don't have to be a designer to succeed here.

Similarly, there are a great many misconceptions about how hard it is to garden with perennial or how easy it is. Great gardens are the product of a great deal of knee-work (yes, done on your knees) and the amount of work to create and maintain a large border can be monstrous

My best tip for anybody thinking of starting a perennial garden is to invest heavily in mulch. It does amazing things for the soil and plant growth but most importantly, several inches of mulch stops most weeds from starting. That's the primary reason every one of my perennial beds is mulched with 3-4 inches of bark or straw. I hate weeding and mulch is my friend.
