Planting a Rose in a Container??

I just bought a "KnockOut" rose shrub (not bare root-it has leaves, etc.,so it came in a plastic container). My husband wants to re-plant it in a regular pot instead of the ground. Do you think this is a good idea? Or, should it go directly into the ground? If it is okay to plant in a pot, start with one slightly larger than the pot it is in already? Please advise as I want to plant it the right way. Thank you.
