Propagate cherry tree

I have a cherry tree, which I loved, but have to cut down because it is dying, and the trunk is splitting, so I am afraid it will fall. We have cut off 3 of it's trunks and there is one left. This trunk has some fairly new growth on it and I am wondering if there is any way I can propagate a new cherry tree from this one. I have done some reading on the internet and it seems unlikely, but I thought I would check further, hence my email to you. If it is possible, would it be best to do stem, leaf or root cuttings? I don't know what type of cherry tree it is, unfortunately, as it was here when I purchased the property. I believe that it is a very old tree. I know it would be easier just to buy another cherry tree, however, I have a bit of sentimental attachment to this one, which is why I thought I would try to propagate it.
Doug says your best bet is to try hardwood cuttings. Here's an article on how to do hardwood cuttings
