pruning asters and daisies for more blooms

my aster are tall I would like them to be in the shape of mums this fall..donot know what kind of aster they are....can I cut them back to 12 to14 inches from ground and will they blooms this fall if I do that


Doug says it's a common technique to prune a "daisy-flowering" type of plant half way back around the first of June to make it bush-up and thicken-up. It will be shorter in blooming time by a bit but have many more lateral branches and flowers.
