Purple flowering plant with dark leaves

by Tina Marshall
(Broken Arrow, OK)

My mother and I are trying to identify a plant that was left by my grandmother. We've never seen anything like it before. My mom leaves it outside on the porch during summer here but brings it in during the winter for dormancy. Please help.

African violet

i agree that you have a variation of African Violet. The variation that i have bears a red flower. It is fairly easy to maintain here in the Caribbean, i am not sure how your seasons will affect it. new plants can be grown by removing one of the hanging clusters and replanting it at the joint.

Streptocarpella

I believe the plant you have is a streptocarpella or streptocarpus.... not sure of the spelling. It is in the African Violet family.

I had one for several years and lost it in a freeze. Just found another in a small nursery in Pearland, TX.

achimenes

I believe this is a plant called achimenes. A small bulb, blooms all summer and does not like temps under 50 degrees.

Hi Tina,
this plant is an Achimenes grandiflora Variety (don't know which one) and is in the same family as the African Violet (Saintpaulia ionantha) and the Gloxinia (Sinningia sp.)
