Re: Roots of Passionflower Vines
by: Anonymous

The trellis boxes were built by the previous homeowner and they are large, probably 3' x 3' or so. I don't think the boxes have drainage holes in the bottom, can't tell since they sit on cement. I haven't seen roots at the bottom of the boxes so no problem in that way. There is probably a good 2' of dirt or more in each box so there is a good amount of room for the roots. I added a new vine to each box this summer as one of the vines in the boxes seems to be dying off.

Are they able to grow out from the bottom of the trellis boxes? I have mine in containers and and the roots went through the holes in the containers into the ground and spread to other areas. I like them, so I'm not complaining.

Containing the passionflower vines is probably a good idea, we have vines in two trellis boxes and this works well. We also have two vines on the fence that seed small plants all over the front lawn and many seedlings grow at the base of the plants on the fence. I just added a few plants I dug up seeded from the fence plants to add to the trellis boxes. I agree you won't ever run out of plants the way they seed everywhere.

They are beauties. What I didn't know about them is that they multiply by underground taproots and can become invasive. I have several of them growing in areas where I didn't plant them. I keep the ones I want, and uproot the rest.
