rooting new cutoffs

I would like to make a fenced in area with my forsythia but constantly buying the trees is expensive - do I need to root it for sure or can I take a clipping and plant it straight into the ground?

Doug says it depends on how moist your garden is (need very moist) and when you take the cutting (when dormant). Do a search on this site for hardwood cuttings. Otherwise, root up the cuttings as you would any other plant (instructions in search as well)
