Silver Lace vine lifespan

I have had silver lace vines in to different cities in southern Ontario. They grow really well and fast. But after 4-5 years they have died?? Is this normal?

Doug says not that he's aware of. Something else is going on here.

Very cold winter
by: Anonymous

We had a very cold winter in northern New Mexico and it appears that I have lost one of my silver lace vines. The survivor was in the courtyard area (about 5 years old), the one that has apparently died (3 years old?) is in front of the garage. The survivor did not all come back like it usually does but it is alive and growing well now (May). I am waiting to see if new shoots will rise from the base of the one that did not make it. So far nothing has happened with that one.

We are in Brantford Ontario and have had the same thing happen twice now. A Silver Lace that has been vigorous and growing well just doesn't come back the next year. One I had pruned and one I hadn't.

I also live in Southern Ontario. I have had silver lace vines in Breslau and in Brantford. In both areas the vines were very healthy and then in the 3-4 year range just died?? Didn't come back after the winter. I am beginning to think this is normal?

This has happened to me twice, now. Luckily, the plant sent up new shoots that took hold the following season. This is one of my "off" years, and the main plant has died. So far, no new shoots, but I am hopeful.

Is it dead?
by: M. Hinton

My silver lace vine has done very well in the last two or three years, but this year it seems to be just a hunk of dead wood! I looked up online how to prune it, and it said to prune in early spring and to cut it back to the few main vines. Well, I did just that, and now it's May and it hasn't done anything!
Please help me, for my mother is telling me she is going to take a chainsaw to it !

Silver Lace Vine turning yellow
by: Anonymous

I am having problems with Silver Lace too. I am in 5a and purchased 4 vines in May. Two turned yellow so I returned them and replaced them, one is growing like crazy with flowers, the new vines look good but one of the original vines just turned yellow and the leaves are falling off. Any idea why? They are all on the east side, and get plently of sun. Why would some flourish and others die? You advise would be appreciated!

Silver Lace Vine Disease?
by: Kelly

We have 2 Silver Lace vines just planted last year. One is doing fantastic! The other is alright, but not great. The one that's grown so much has developed some yellow leaves with black spots about a quarter of the way up the plant. Any ideas? I thought these guys were resistant to diseases.

Silver Lace Vine died
by: Cathy

My silver lace vine was very vigorous last summer but didn't make it through our Southern Ontario winter. My sister in another town 80 K away informed me that her Silver Lace Vine which was at least 6 years old and very healthy last year also died. Any ideas why?

What killed my Silver Lace?
by: Diane

I have a Silver Lace vine as well that did very well for 4 years. It looked great in the fall, but it's almost June and it is not coming back at all. It appears to be dead even though no other plant life near it seems affected. Does anyone have any idea what happened to it and whether or not there is anything that can save it?

We have three silver lace vines . One, we cut back to about three feet each fall. They grow very fast and bloom probably in August. Very full.

Me too! I planted 4 vines along our back fence in 2004. They grew vigorously, but one died last year...and two look as if they didn't make it through the winter this year. Any idea what might be causing this.
