Small Yellow Flowers, Dark Leaves

by Cyndi
(Beaverton, Ontario)

This dark leaf plant grows quite tall with dainty yellow flowers in the summer. I have it in a sun location (I am in Beaverton Ontario, zone 5a). I was told it was a Lysmachea Punctata, but I don't think it is correct, as it does not grow in clumps, the flowers are more delicate and the leaves are the wrong color. I started off with 2 plants last year that were given to me, and there is now about 10 of them, so it grows well.

i am not even sure how this plant got onto my property, perhaps it came with me in a pot when i left my mother's house. if anything, our pots are kept on a large cement driveway on the side of the house. long story short....two years later it is trying to take over my entire backyard! it has also popped up in cracks and unused pots all over the driveway as well

Thank you all for your entries.....even though it gives my garden some nice color contrast I too am finding it a nuisance. I was going to dig it all up, but now I think I will try Barbra C's idea and use some edging to keep it under control.

Purple Fringed Loosestrife

I forgot to list the entire name :
Lysimachia ciliata Cultivar: Purpurea

Lysimachis ciliata is a native wildflower here in the northeast, and has green leaves. This is a cultiver with very attractive purple leaves that is now sold at garden centers and nurserys.

The common name for this is purple fringed loosestrife. Purple because of the color of the leaves and fringed because it has hairy stems. It does grow and fill in well, but is easy enough to control. I have started using plastic garden edging around plants like this that grow by root expansion. I use the small 6-8"wide by 4-5" deep sections that slide together to form whatever shape you want. Controlled in this way it forms a nice bushy form that is really attractive and eye-catching. The bronze/purple foliage really sets off the small yellow flowers.

I planted this flower and it became a nuisance. Spreads quickly and is difficult to get rid of. I agree, it is what the previous writer indicated-lych----
