I have one too
by: Lynn

I have one of these plants in my garden in the UK - it's about 10 years old and recently grew twice its size in 6 months, and produced a long thick stalk which is currently covered in red 'fingers' (not really flowers at this point but suspect they will be), The ends of the leaves are sharp and can pierce the skin if you brush up close. I bought it from the local garden centre but can't remember what it's called - I came on here for help!

One more "go"?
by: Ferne

I would like to give it one more "go" with your permission Doug.

Even if I do live in the only desert area of Canada this type of plant does not grow wild this far north. We do have at least a couple of native cacti and other desert plants.

Try looking up "Agave angustifolia var. marginata". I think you will find a couple of dead ringers if you look a bit. They do flower at some point (yellow/green), pup easily, and have those little thorns up and down the leaves that I couldn't see in your picture and neglected to absorb from your description. Still remains a bit of a guess but it IS a commonly grown pot variety and available in lots of places. I did see the odd picture that looked absolutely identical.

Australian
by: Doug

One of the problems is that I made a mistake and allowed this plant into the list - it is in Australia - and not likely very common here in NA. So don't expect an answer - suggest you get one from a local garden center

Spiky Plant
by: Rolley

No - This one does not have any flowers. I know the one you are talking about. It has a beautiful RED flower and then a 1000 seeds come for the flower. Then the plant dies. Have another go please

Brisbane, California???

Looks like some kind of Yucca to me. A desert plant with stiff leaves that will often send up long flower spikes with plenty of sun and a very minimal amount of water. Yours is a very nice specimen.
