Oh, how I wish I could see other comments in this forum. I 'knew' before I wrote, that you didn't say wine makers, but, as I started to write, my mind went back to a local winery, and the wonderful, non-traditional wines they made. Sorry.
I think from now on, I will open two tabs so I can see what I am writing about. =}

Wine makers you say? They may have added this plant in their garden for a big of great flavor. That is If it's Oregon grape and not some other Mahonia. We used to go out and collect as many grapes as possible, and make the best jelly from them. Or eat them off the plant. Soury but, still good. I guess the unripe fruit does look a bit like a lime, but, I would have to wait until mid-summer here to find out for sure. They are green unripe, and sort of lime shaped, but are smooth skinned to my recollection. I may be wrong though, it has been many a year since I have been close to a 'clump' of these wonderful plants.

That may be it!

I googled some pictures of the Mahonia Aquifolium, and that sure looks a lot like what I have growing in my yard! My initial thought was that it was some type of grape, but I couldn't find a winter bloomer that looked anything like my plant. The people who built this house were both avid wine drinkers and gardeners - so a grape seems to "fit". But this plant was blooming in December when we moved in, and has more blooms now, in January. It has been a mild winter, but not THAT mild, so it threw me off. Plus, the hanging pods that really look exactly like limes. Well, they're just strange! THink I will need to go cut one down and cut it open to investigate urther. Thank you so much for the info to help start me out!

This looks a lot like Mahonia aquifolium. Oregon Grape. But, there are quite a few varieties. At least one of which is considered invasive. Difficult to tell with yours though. I did read that Lewis and Clark brought some back from their expedition, so it is possible that it is Oregon Grape.
