does it have thorns on the stems?? I have a plant that looks simular and has thorns on the stems

Tall
by: Grambo

It could also be an American Chestnut. Practically wiped out due to I think it was Dutch Elm disease?

We have a few that survived here. One very large beauty was destined to be cut down for completion of a speedway. Once we got it out to the community, it was saved. There is a fence around it to protect it from vandals, and in the fall after the first freeze, the tree is full of people collecting the chestnuts.

Ginseng
by: Anonymous

It loks alot like Ginseng to me. Which is a medicinal herb. It's very good when you're sick and antiviral. Dig up the root and then eat it raw, or make a tea. Virginia creeper is a vine-like plant..not a shrub so it's definately not that. If the root is a whiteish colour, and resembles a torso, then it's Ginseng.

Virginia Creeper
by: katie

Definately, Definately Virginia Creeper - it's overrun in my backyard - and it intertwines with poison ivy - it's probably growing under a tree, or by a wall or fence. . eh eh????
i'm in WV. . it is early June and there are plants like your picture . . really really big -and also plants newly growing. . baby creepers -
be aware: some people are highly allergic to this plant - some get a rash worse than poison ivy when touching it. . or when it's oils get on your skin

OMG I just googled and you're right! It will be huge! I do have a large backyard (although this is right up beside the house). Do you think I'd be able to transplant it into a open area and have it grow? Thanks so much for eveyone's help!

mystery plant
by: Anonymous

It's an Aesculus (conker or chestnut tree) I think. I'd dig it out before it gets huge.

It doesn't appear to be Aralia
by: Marilyn

I Googled for images of Aralia and I don't see any there that match what I've got. My leaves have a very pronouned saw-toothed edge. You're right--it is large and tropical looking:)

Split Leaved plant
by: Kamia

Looks like an Aralia to me. When in a good location, they produce seed pods that the birds eat and leave everywhere, but it can be a great addition if you're going to a tropical effect.

Clarification
by: Marilyn

No, its not a vine. Its growing on a relatively sturdy stalk (about 1/2-1").

virginia creeper?
by: Anonymous

Is it a vine? Looks like virginia creeper - a vine with gorgeous fall foliage.
