I was google-ing to see what these are and came across this thread. I live in North Caolina as well and These were planted by the previous owner of our house. after the first winter hear when the long stems turned brown i pulled them all up. Then they came back like wildfire. They have actually started to spread beyond the boarder of where they were planted.
love this plant! by: Robin
I keep seeing them everywhere in Chicago and they seem to be coming back after harsh winters versus having to pull them up. Would love to try to grow them as perennials; others seem to have had good luck with them in my neighborhood
I have the same Tall Red Flower! by: Anonymous
My daughter in-law gave me a piece of root from this flower and I planted it here in Central VA and it is a very hardy and beautiful flower all summer. You can dig them up in the fall and cut the roots to help them spread further. I found a picture of them and it looks like they may be called Musafolia Hybrid. I love this flower and have planted them behind my waterfall. Stunning effect!

It is a canna. They grow from bulbs. I live in Southern Illinois. We must dig ours in the fall. They come in pinks, yellows, oranges and reds. Sometimes if I have one near the house in a protected area it will come back on its own. You live where it is warm it might come back the next year on its own.

Many species of Canna. This delicate one is especially pretty.

Looks like Canna lily to me, too.

This looks like a Cana (Canna?) Lilly to me. Here in Wisconsin, you have to take the bulbs out and winter them indoors.
