Most plants get at least 5- 6 feet tall.....purple tail like flower pods.....similiar to gooseneck but has multiple flower pods on one stem.......spreads extremely easily........love the look of the plant but hard to keep it in just one spot......zone 5/6.......sunny location....it was in my mothers garden........and I brought some dried pods home last year and sowed them in my flower garden.......and they are everywhere this year......

Obedient Plant

I planted it a year ago and it has nearly filled a circular bed already. That's okay... it's confined. :-)

It's very pretty... but seeds itself fairly aggressively.

It was sown from seed from my moms plant...but it easily reseeds itself....which it did even before the season was up.......like I said........very aggresive.!! It is definately the celosia spicata or flamingo feather. It grew like crazy.....the site I looked at said it can get 3 feet tall.......but alot of these plants grew taller than that...........I unfortunatly never expected all of them to grow..........I kinda spread the seed around cause at my moms there was only one every whip stitch spread throughout her flowers........but all of them came up.........one pod( or seed head) had a lot of seeds in it.........it just doesnt have the obedient type flower........it is strawlike....I dont think there is any other way to add another photo here........

I do not think it is Physostegia nor goose neck loosestrife. The flower is all wrong for Physostegia. It could be the celosia...the flower sure looks right and the leaves are narrow like this plant. I have it and it comes back from seed every year in my zone 5 garden, tho I have not had it get 5-6' tall. The zone 5-6 and warmer temps may produce more plants and height than my colder zone.

Does this plant look like it is a perennial or just a reseeded annual?? When you say you spread seed from your mothers garden, Did the plants come up where you seeded...only??

I haven't seen C.a. spicata before, but the flowers look like ironweed or culver's root. (Veronicastrum virginicum, white form) Perhaps a closeup of the leaves would help be more definitive?

YEA!!! I got it solved......it is Celosia Argentea....Spirata....someone at Dave's Garden Id'ed it for me..........

It has a straw like consistency after awhile.......blooms from early summer......into fall........and dries out on the stems......so it looks good still in fall( when it drops its seeds)..............has to be staked during windy weather.......can blow over....the leaves look like an obedient flower.......but the flower doesnt.......may be a cousin.......it is very similiar to gooseneck......except it has multiple pods on one stem...........
