Tomato Problems

Tomato problems bring more questions than any other vegetable garden issue.

Here are the basics of getting healthy fruit and dealing with problems.

Tomato Cracking

Cracking of the skins is mostly a problem of inconsistent watering or water availablility. The plants take it up and grow too quickly for the skins to expand. It mostly seems to happen when you water after a dry spell.

The plants get too greedy and take more than they can use (at least from your point of view). The solution is to water more thoroughly and more consistently. This is why using an irrigation system and timing it is much more efficient than hand watering. You get more consistency and far fewer cracks.

Bottom Black Spots

Blossom end rot looks like the bottom of the tomato is rotting away. It is shrunken and black.

This is a watering problem again. The plant needed calcium at some point in its development of the fruit and there wasn’t enough water to transport the calcium up to the fruit. So this condition develops.

The solution is to increase the watering and make it consistent. You'll often see this condition on the first fruit set of the season but subsequent fruit clusters are not affected. So yes, you can fix it by regular watering for later fruit sets.

Tomato Blight

Tomato Blight is a common name for one of three problems. Two of which will let you have some fruit and the third is a plant killer. Here's how to recognize and prevent them.
