Tomatoes in the fall/winter

I plan on started some tomatoes in planters. But I am a little late getting started. Can I still grow them in the fall/winter or is it better to wait until next year. You website is extremely helpful so far. Thank you!

Doug says that the main problem with growing tomatoes in the winter - even in warm climates - is the lowered light levels that restrict growth and blooming/pollination.

So gardens in very warm areas can keep them alive but if the light levels go down too far then the plant is alive but sitting there. If light levels don't go down - then you're fine to grow and get fruit.

Having said that - cold areas of course need protection indoors and very high supplemental lighting to keep plants fruiting.

Keeping them alive is no problem indoors - getting them to fruit can be a bit of a challenge in low light areas.
