Tulips in pots in ground

Last year I decided to put my tulip bulbs in pots and buried the pots in the locations where I wanted them, so that when the leaves would be wilted, it would be easier for me to move them to another location in the back. I did not get as many tulips flowering. And the same happened with my alliums in their pot (2 instead of 4 flowered). Do you know why? Was putting them in pots a bad idea?

Doug says I've done this - it worked fine for me. It may be that you put too many into the pot (crowded them too much) or the winter took them out or any number of reasons. Or the pots were too small (I use 12-inch pots buried to the rim) But the pot trick works well in general.
