Tulips - indoor plants outdoors too soon

by CARMA

I've owned tulips before but I thought I killed them. I've looked everywhere (I'm sure the answer is somewhere, I just can't find it.) I thought I killed them because they only flowered once. Do they only flower once?
My husband just bought me the most beautiful red and yellow tulips. I mistakenly moved them from the window to the outside for some sun. I don't even know that they should have been in the direct sunlight. I also forgot them overnight. I'm sure I shocked the heck out of them because when I went to get them in the morning they appeared dead. The flowers had fallen off and the leaves were yellow and floppy. I brought them in and the next day the leaves were still yellow but they were stiff (back to normal but still yellow.) Now I don't know what to do.
So my questions are how often do tulips flower, are they best left inside and what do I do about my new tulips?
Thanks for your time and help!

Doug says that tulips only flower once per season. So you've enjoyed them for this year.

You're in California. My advice is to toss them out and purchase another pot next year. Unless you can give them 14 weeks of cold dormancy to induce blooming again (like around 40F, then they won't form buds and bloom again. The instructions for doing this can be found at my flower bulb website but unless you want a challenge, don't bother.

Or give them to a stubborn neighbour who wants to garden with them. :-)

And give that hubby a hug for giving them to you in the first place. :-)
